Mission Statement
Everyone has insecurities. Why not face yours in this trip to the bizarre backwoods. As emerging filmmaking in Tucson, we strive to produce high quality narrative projects that prove Tucson has a lot more to offer than dirt and dry heat.
Introduction
We now live in a world where everyone and everything is watched, examined, and perceived. People always have their thoughts on a subject, whether they share them or not…
About 'Backwoods Luau'
That brings us to BACKWOODS LU’AU, a dark comedy that asks the question: “What would we do if we knew everything someone thinks about us?”
This dark comedy explores themes of escapism and self-discovery, blending humor with a touch of the bizarre. Follow our protagonist’s journey as he navigates a world that becomes increasingly strange and unpredictable.
Meet Victor
We follow Victor, an everyday kind of loser looking for a brief getaway from life’s daily stressors. In an attempt to retreat into the woods, he finds himself in a situation that presents the exact opposite. Unprepared for a night of camping, Victor becomes the unfortunate target of some fellow campers. This couple does something we all do, whether we’re aware of it or not…
They watch, judge, and find amusement in everything Victor does. The difference here is that Victor knows it. He can hear every last thing they’re saying about him. Their commentary fuels his insecurity and leads him down a feverish hole throughout the night.
Our Vision
The inspiration for the project comes from a personal camping experience. Our goal is to maintain the realism and believability of the situation until things start getting strange for Victor.
Using extreme focal lengths, long zooms, and heavy foreground elements, we want to put the audience in the shoes of a spectator. The camera will serve as a clear observer of Victor, much like the campers are observers of him in the story. The film will be stylized but mature and restrained in its use of that style.
Our inspiration
BACKWOODS LU’AU will lean towards a documentary style, capturing the story beats as naturally as possible. Taking influence from filmmakers like the Safdie Brothers (GOOD TIME, Uncut Gems), Nathan Fielder (Nathan for You, The Curse), and documentarian Lance Oppenheim (Some Kind of Heaven), our vision is to create a reality in the film that is as close to one we all know and relate to. This way, when things go sideways for Victor as the night goes on, the surreal elements of the film stand out even more.
